Fuel Injectors 101 By Auto 22

Auto 22

It is only natural for customers to show an interest in whats under their bonnet, and at Auto 22 were more than happy to settle those curiosities. Here we have an answer for one of those questions that continually pops up.

What is a Fuel Injector?

A Fuel Injector concerns the system which mixes air and fuel in a combustion engine. Through filtering fuel through a small nozzle usually located near the manifold, gasoline and diesel is forced through a pressurized system to deliver sufficient fuel to the engine.

So How Does it Work?

Through precisely calculating a sufficient air/fuel ration depending on car performance, the fuel injectors performance correlates with amount of pressure you apply to the accelerator.

When you rev your engine, your foot pedal is signaling to the throttle valve to increase its air intake in order to supply the cylinders with more fuel.

At this point the Fuel Injector atomizes the petrol/gasoline in order to transform it into a fine mist making it more suitable for the cylinders and for burning.

Common Problems

At Auto 22 we have encountered many problems concerning Fuel Injectors. Primarily we encounter issues when they become blocked and clogged. This can adhere acceleration and effect speed maintenance, decreasing your cars performance as the fuel may not be able to reach the valves as effectively as possible. Luckily Fuel Injectors are relatively cheap, and can be easily replaced and installed by a trained mechanic.

If you are finding difficulty in starting your car, this may also be attributed to a poor electrical connection in your engine and Fuel Injector. Mainly because the Injector may not be able to provide an ample ratio between air and fuel to the valves.

Fuel Injectors are an integral part of every engine. They require little maintenance can often be found as a key attribute to car trouble.

When Should I Change My Car's Oil?

When to change you oil is always a debate amongst car lovers, but it ultimately comes down to two main factors:

  • How often do you use your car?
  • How many miles do you do each year?

The experts recommend that you change you oil every 7,500 miles, however if you do less than this you must be sure to change the oil at least once per year. This was quoted on Yahoo Autos:

It is very important to make sure that the oil in your car is clean and of sufficient quality. The oil helps to lubricate the parts such as the clutch, differentials and transmission. If your oil is not topped up or it is getting old, these parts will simply seise up and stop working.

It has many other uses such as a cleaning function, a sealant, combats combustion and a fantastic engine coolant to assist the other cooling features in an engine.

Many people get confused when it comes to buying the right oil to put into their cars, but this guide will be of use when doing so:

A Fast Guide to Tyres

A quick guide to checking your tyres

More than just circular pieces of rubber, tyres provide your car with the stability and safety needed to maintain a high level of performance. And despite being in constant use and suffering constant weather abuse, checking your tyres regularly is something a lot of us fail to do enough. Fundamental to our stopping and breaking, cornering and traction, the depth of our tyres can have a profound effect on how long it takes us to break in the wet, and inadequate depth can often be attributed to the regular occurrence of 'Aquaplaning'.

In the UK, the minimum tyre depth legal requirement stands at 1.6mm across the central circumference of the tyre and most car manufacturers recommend a minimum of 3mm depth. To accompany the legality a £2,500 penalty and 3 point deduction is currently enforced. But avoiding this can be easy. A regular check of your tyres from your local garage will be able to save you the money and license points.

Tyres come in many varying forms with the two most common being radial and cross-ply. By consulting your manufacturers guide book or enquiring at your local service garage, you will be able to establish the correct tyre for your axle base.
